Professional Work Overview

 

 

Steven M. Miller is currently Associate Professor of Sonic Arts at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore. He teaches courses and private lessons in composition, electroacoustic/computer music, sound art, and soundscape studies.

Until 2008 he was Professor of Contemporary Music at the The College of Santa Fe's Contemporary Music Program (CMP). From August 1995 to September 1997, Miller served as Director of the CMP. From 1997 to 2000 he served as Assistant Chair of the Performing Arts Department for Contemporary Music. In 2001-2002, he was again the acting director of the CMP.

Previous teaching also included a series of lectures given at STSI-Surakarta, Central Java Indonesia in July 1996 and a number of guest lectures in the greater NYC area in 2005. In addition to his teaching duties he maintains an active performance and recording schedule.


During the 2004-2005 academic year, Miller was on sabbatical in NYC. He was a visiting scholar at the Columbia University Computer Music Center, a member of Gamelan Son of Lion composer's cooperative ensemble, and performed and rehearsed with Gamelan Kusuma Laras (based at the NYC Indonesian Consulate). Performances with these ensembles were presented at Symphony Space, Roulette at Location One, and Greenwich House/Renee Weiler Concert Hall. He presented a concert of his solo electroacoustic music at the Deep Listening Space in Kingston, NY, and gave a solo performance on a concert at NYU. He also presented a pre-release screening of the film True Love, for which he composed the original score, and held a discussion/Q&A open to students, faculty, and the public at Hunter College.

Miller gave guest lectures on his music at Columbia University Computer Music Center, Princeton University Music Department, SUNY New Paltz Music Department, the graduate program in electroacoustic music at Dartmouth College, and the NYU Music Technology program, among other venues. He was one of 5 panelists invited to participate in a panel discussion on Urban Noise presented by the New York Society for Acoustic Ecology at the Film and Media Sudies Department at Hunter College. He also served as a member of the curatorial team for the Electronic Music Foundation's acoustic ecology project "An Ear to the Earth."
